The University of Alabama/University of West Alabama Regional In-Service Education Center, established by Alabama Legislation in 1984, is one of the eleven state regional centers whose purpose is to provide effective professional development for K-12 educators in designated public schools in its geographic region. The region includes Tuscaloosa City, Tuscaloosa County, Fayette County, Lamar County, Pickens County, Greene County, Hale County, Sumter County, Demopolis City, Linden City, Choctaw county and Marengo County. In addition to offering professional development opportunities for the schools within the region, the In-Service Education Center administrates several major projects for the Alabama State Department of Education, including Alabama Science in Motion, the Alabama Reading Initiative, the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative, and Technology in Motion.
The Center offers and support programs that adhere to the national and state standards for professional development ---- researched based, job-embedded, on-going, and/or school based. The need for requested programs by districts or schools must be supported by data (e.g., student achievement data, needs assessment data, EDUCATEAlabama data, or data associated with the Continuous Improvement Plan). Examples of professional development available through the Center include book studies, professional learning groups, making available substitutes so teachers may go on site visits to other classrooms or schools to observe exemplary teachers, best practices or designated instructional strategies. There is no charge for participation in any programs sponsored by the UA/UWA In-Service Education Center.
